Black child riding on an adult's shoulders in a park Ce The Center for Health Justice seeks to enable health through racial, economic, and environmental justice for Black, Brown, and all people and neighborhoods harmed by structural inequity

The Center for Health Justice (CHJ) was launched on September 1, 2023, with a vision to enable health through racial, economic, and environmental justice for Black, Brown, and all people and neighborhoods harmed by structural inequity.

Our work spans three portfolios – research, community action, and health system transformation – managed by two groups. Research and community action are led by the Urban Health Lab @ CHJ, and health system transformation is led by Health Justice Transformation @ CHJ. Our Center collaborates across Penn Medicine, the Perelman School of Medicine, and the University of Pennsylvania to guide strategy and implementation as well as build infrastructure and accountability to enable transformative structural and policy change.

Eugenia C. South, MD, MS, associate vice president of health justice and associate professor of emergency medicine, is the faculty director of CHJ. Nicole Thomas, MBA, is the director of CHJ.
