Using active choice and multiple asks to increase routine HIV screening in the ED

The rate of HIV in Philadelphia is 100 times that of the United States, making it an epidemic by CDC definition. The State of Pennsylvania recommends that all patients presenting to an Emergency Department be screened for HIV using an opt-out consent process.  However, at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, the Emergency Department has an opt-in process, and rates are low at about 7%.

We are working with the health system to redesign the consent progress and embed nudges in the patient and clinician workflow to increase HIV screening in the Emergency Department.

This project is currently in progress.
